Techno and the Art of Progression

Today I will be looking at an artist which inspires me to write music. As inspiration comes from many sources I am focusing on one which has been instrumental to my own development as an artist.
I will be looking at Weska from Canada.

Weska’s style is within what I would personally describe as the heavy yet melodic end of “big room” techno. As a style it is most commonly associated with the label Drumcode from Sweden and Black Octopus from the USA. prominent artists alongside Weska are also Sian, Adam Beyer, and Alan Fitzpatrick (to name some well known artists).

The origins of techno are from Detroit. It was originally made by amalgamating Chicago funk and house music in the early 1980’s. with pioneering artists such as Kraftwerk and Juan Atkins.
The sound is characterised by its bass heavy kicks in 4/4 on each quarter note and repeating musical phrases. hi hats carry the pacing of the tracks. It can be a very “dark” style of music in so far as the themes present and has been described as “futuristic” and looked at a lot of themes of late american capitalist society. However unlike its roots which is House music, techno tends to be a slightly more aggressive style.

Nevertheless, how has techno influenced me? and specifically Weska?
The use of repeating themes as well as incorporating a steady progressive style which bucks the trend within such an established genre has been instrumental my own self expression within music. It not only forced me to consider more carefully how i am actually writing a track but also to think about structure and what i want to actually express in a track.
Alongside this, Weska’s clever use of delayed kicks to add pacing to tracks that usually sit around the 126bpm mark has allowed me to make tracks slower whilst still containing more energy. this combined with his, (what i consider amazing) use of stabs and claps to add dynamic elements to his tracks has always inspired me to try and push the envelope of what i create.
